Morning!
And how are things over in your neck of the woods? Over here in LingLand, life is moving along just peachy-like - I just returned from my dojo where I was shown the *right* way to execute a particular aikido throw (incompetence - thy name is Barbara!) and am now writing my daily blogs.
But I digress.
Today’s topic deals with "reputation management", otherwise known as "keeping track of when people try to mangle yours."
This particular concept became quite near and dear to my heart when I discovered a former colleague of mine in the recruiting industry was denigrating me on his blog. I wrote my reactions to that over at The Law of Pro-action IN Action - When people denigrate you, here’s how to respond.
It brought to mind how important it is to always know how people are discussing you online…and what to do when negative communications are voiced. There are many techniques you can implement for detection, and many ideas you can explore for resolution. I’ve gathered my favorite ones below - enjoy!
Step 1.) Monitor your name/brand online.
Visit Google News Alerts and set up an "as it occurs" news alert for ideally all of the following:
- Your name
- Your name in quotes
- Your email address
- Your social networking handles
- Your blog title
- Your company name
The goal here is to be kept aware of whenever the above items show up ANYWHERE on the Internet in forums, blog postings, etc. The amount of data you’ll receive can be staggering - I had no idea how my tweets on Twitter propogate via MyBlogLog, FriendFind etc.!
Step 2.) Monitor your colleague’s name/brands as well.
This is simply doing a good deed - you can give your colleagues a headsup whenever negative comments are posted about them. Not too many people know how to monitor their brands online.
Step 3.) Monitor your competitor’s name/brands too!
Okay, this isn’t reputation management per-se, but hey, you can see where your competitors are talked about and spring to their defense.
Step 4.) Do Steps 1-3 for Yahoo News and Technorati
True, it might be overkill, but you can set up news feeds for your name/blog name/etc and include them in your feed reader as well.
See?
Now, let’s bring this post back to the most important person you can imagine - you!
The perception of your name and brand online can be the difference between profits and zero sales.
Just think how, well, non-optimal it would be if, for example, a negative posting about you showed up in a Google search before your own site did.
Right?
