Morning!
And how are you today? Over here in LingLand, life is doing just peachy-like - Paradise envelops my personal landscape next week (ie, school starts! :) ), my body has recovered from the massive weight-lifting/stretching I did two days ago and is ready to tackle karate sparring tonight, and all in all….everything is coming up butterflies.
But I digress.
Today’s topic is your Wordpress Self Defense! I just wrote over at my Personal Development blog the article Today’s Thought to Share - Self Defense, and figured that further exploring that topic in the realms of blogging and online business would be a most wondrous thing indeed.
So let’s begin!
Step 1 - Disable Blog Registrations
First off, unless you have a REALLY IMPORTANT REASON (on par with saving the Universe from the Evil Empire of Zorg), you should NEVER EVER EVER let unknown peoples register at your blog.
Why, I hear you ask?
Simple….because you don’t know what they’ll do….nor to what data they’ll be exposed.
I was reminded of this a few days ago when I wanted to comment at a blog and had to register first. Blah blah blah, thought I, but alright, let me register. And when I did, I found I could see their Woopra ID, their posts stats and more.
Not a good thing!
Of course, I alerted the blog owner to this, and the problem was fixed. But the point remains - unless you have specific guest posters (and even then, take the 30 seconds required to manually register them yourself), disable user registration. You can do this by visiting
YOURBLOG/wp-admin/options-general.php
and checking OFF:
Users must be registered and logged in to comment
and NOT checking:
Anyone can register
If by chance you INSIST on having user registrations, make certain you have installed the plugin
It requires a Recaptcha to be typed prior to registration being activated.
Other Wordpress Login Security plugins include:
Step 2 - Install General Wordpress Security Plugins
Don’t stop just with registrations, however! 2 other wordpress security plugins you can install include:
What about spambots, I hear you ask? That’s another article entirely…..coming soon!
And last but certainly not least:
Step 3 - Read the following Wordpress Security Posts
There are lots of excellent resources regarding Wordpress security online! Do yourself a favor and read in detail these 3:
- Hardening Wordpress
- Wordpress Security Prevention
- Wordpress Security Tips and Hacks - Wonderful advice
Knowledge is the best defense against online attacks - hope the above has been helpful.
Enjoy,
